Protecting Your Flat or Low-Slope Roof

Keep Your SPF Polyurethane Roof in Top Shape

Flat roof spray foam Saskatchewan — SPF polyurethane coating on a finished commercial rooftop

Flat roof spray foam is one of the most effective long-term solutions for Saskatchewan buildings — but like any roof, an SPF system needs care to perform at its best over decades of Prairie freeze-thaw cycles.

Why Flat Roof Spray Foam in Saskatchewan Needs Care

SPF is durable, but it’s vulnerable to two main threats: mechanical damage from foot traffic or rooftop work, and UV degradation of the protective coating over time. The good news: both are easy to manage with basic maintenance.

Controlling Foot Traffic

  • Designate walk paths with reinforced zones for safe maintenance access
  • Restrict roof access to trained personnel
  • Use protective work blankets when contractors are on the roof

Inspection Schedule

Inspect at least twice per year (spring and fall) plus after any major storm. Look for:

  • Ponding water or drainage blockages
  • Blisters or delamination in the foam
  • Coating wear or colour change (signs of UV exposure)
  • Damage around penetrations and edges

Recoating

Protective coatings should be renewed every 10–15 years to restore UV resistance and waterproofing. This is far less costly than a full roof replacement and essentially resets the roof’s lifespan.

Other Maintenance Tips

  • Keep drains and scuppers clear — especially before winter
  • Monitor for ice dam buildup in freeze-thaw conditions
  • Install bird deterrents if wildlife is a problem on your roof
