Protecting Your Flat or Low-Slope Roof
Keep Your SPF Polyurethane Roof in Top Shape

Flat roof spray foam is one of the most effective long-term solutions for Saskatchewan buildings — but like any roof, an SPF system needs care to perform at its best over decades of Prairie freeze-thaw cycles.
Why Flat Roof Spray Foam in Saskatchewan Needs Care
SPF is durable, but it’s vulnerable to two main threats: mechanical damage from foot traffic or rooftop work, and UV degradation of the protective coating over time. The good news: both are easy to manage with basic maintenance.
Controlling Foot Traffic
- Designate walk paths with reinforced zones for safe maintenance access
- Restrict roof access to trained personnel
- Use protective work blankets when contractors are on the roof
Inspection Schedule
Inspect at least twice per year (spring and fall) plus after any major storm. Look for:
- Ponding water or drainage blockages
- Blisters or delamination in the foam
- Coating wear or colour change (signs of UV exposure)
- Damage around penetrations and edges
Recoating
Protective coatings should be renewed every 10–15 years to restore UV resistance and waterproofing. This is far less costly than a full roof replacement and essentially resets the roof’s lifespan.
Other Maintenance Tips
- Keep drains and scuppers clear — especially before winter
- Monitor for ice dam buildup in freeze-thaw conditions
- Install bird deterrents if wildlife is a problem on your roof
