Rodent-Proofing Your Prairie Home

How to Keep Mice Out with Spray Foam and Smarter Sealing

Living in rural Saskatchewan or Alberta means beautiful wide-open spaces — and an ongoing battle with mice. As temperatures drop, prairie homes become prime targets for rodents seeking warmth and shelter.

The Truth About Mice and Insulation

It’s a common misconception that certain insulation types deter mice. In reality, mice can and will chew through fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool, and yes — spray foam too. No insulation material on its own is rodent-proof.

Rodent Proofing with Spray Foam: What It Does Best

Spray foam is still one of the most effective tools for rodent-proofing — especially for sealing the small gaps, cracks, and hard-to-reach areas where mice actually enter. Used as part of a layered approach, it significantly reduces entry points.

Common Entry Points to Target

  • Pipe and utility penetrations
  • Dryer exhaust and vent openings
  • Foundation cracks and gaps
  • Basement windows and sills
  • Under siding and at rim joists

The Layered Approach

  1. Identify all entry points around the foundation, utility penetrations, and roof line
  2. Seal gaps with spray foam + steel wool or copper mesh packed into larger openings (rodents won’t chew through metal)
  3. Use metal flashing on larger openings at the foundation and base of walls
  4. Clean the perimeter — remove debris, wood piles, and stored feed that attract rodents

In prairie country, mice aren’t just a nuisance — they cause real damage and health risks. Spray foam is part of the solution, not the whole answer.
